Finding Connection and Inspiration: A Detour to Big Sky

Exploring the Power of Storytelling.

(My Recap of the Montana Dude Ranch Experience.)

This was my 6th(!) year bringing a group of Darlings to Detour at the Nine Quarter Circle Ranch in Big Sky... and I decided to put a twist on this one.

Our days are always full of trail rides, hiking, fishing lessons, and more. In the evenings we're served a delicious ranch dinner and then gather around the campfire with a glass of wine or mug of tea in hand. In the past, we’ve had line-dancing lessons, guitar players, and always, always live music. This year, I decided to immerse the Darlings in the songwriting process as a means to explore a different way of sharing your stories. There was no musical training required, and no one had to sing, but two of the women this year ended up writing a full song! And everyone went home with their own crafted phrases in their pocket as a reminder their voice.

I always incorporate creative practices into these retreats. And usually, I like to switch them around so each year is a surprise. It was a joy to have our local artist Lena Rich lead the songwriting workshops. We also had Kellie Swanson, a Bozeman-based artist and photographer to the ranch. She shared her craft of creating sustainable, upcycled cyanotype fabric printing and guided each Darling in making prints and bandanas to take home to wear as a memento of her Detour. I styled mine with some fun fringe.

My retreat schedule for the ranch is always designed to take full advantage of the surrounding wilderness and provide the Darlings with a unique dude ranch experience. Each day starts with movement + rituals and a hearty ranch breakfast before we head out to explore on horseback. The Nine Quarter Circle

horses are bred, born, raised and trained on the ranch, with the intention of providing guests of varying riding abilities a safe and enjoyable experience. All rides are fully supported by the ranch wranglers and there is plenty of time to get comfortable if you're new to riding.

Every year has its own special flavor. For me, the big memories from 2023 were crossing the Taylor Fork on horseback at the highest level of the season (and all the Darlings did it!) and our BBQ party/line dancing night with the entire ranch crew. Connection is a big thing for me and sharing a meal, dancing, and laughing with folks from all walks of life is what it’s all about.
