Why Morocco?

You might be wondering why I chose Morocco as a place to travel as a woman.

And why do I think Morocco is such an important place for us to Detour?

Well, personally, selfishly, I've had Morocco on my bucket list to travel to since I can remember, which has been a long time. From afar, I’ve been fascinated by the culture, religion, people, geographic location in North Africa, its importance in trade and culture, and art and creativity. So I was thrilled when the opportunity arose to with Megan of Glo Luxury Oils to plan a Dare retreat to this fascinating, exotic, and adventurous country. We also have the good fortune of being fully supported by Moroccan insiders and professional guides, Youssef Kamal and his wife Burçin Yetim, for our entire Detour.

But the most important reason I chose to Detour in Morocco is that it is so very different than the culture we know here in the U.S. — especially as women. This one is going to be a true Detour. Morocco holds a very different type of geography being in North Africa, with a fascinating cultural history, a different language, and a different faith base. But what’s even more enticing to me is that we will have the chance to gather and connect with the women of this country. Because of our amazing tour guide Youssef, we will be able to connect with the women in all of the communities we visit. To me, it's this connection that makes Morocco so special, and I can't wait to get there.

Megan perhaps described Morocco best:

“Typically, when I travel abroad, I gain a deep appreciation for the beauty, culture, and experience which is later stored in my memory bank. But Morocco was not simply a beautiful memory. She left me yearning for more. I couldn’t shake the kindness and generosity of the people, the tantalizing scents everywhere I turned, or the vibrant colors of textiles, plants, and architecture.”

When I came up with ‘Our Stories Matter’ as the theme for 2023 I realized that each Detour this year would provide a different opportunity for connection through stories. In Morocco, the shared stories with the local women will allow us to connect to each other’s cultures. At Dare Montana, we will be sharing our own stories and reconnecting with ourselves. And backpacking in the Beartooths, I believe, will provide an incredible opportunity to connect with our bodies and the spirit of nature that surrounds us.

So why Morocco?

I believe that Detouring out of our comfort zone and making deep connections with other women inevitably enables us to feel seen and whole in this crazy thing called life.

If you’re Daring to do something this year, there is still time and room to join us for Morocco in May. Or, check out the other 2023 travel opportunities here.
