Big Money Moves

I’m in the mood to get real about money, and I want to get into how to master the mental moves that happen behind-the-scenes of big purchases. So, buckle up because I'm whisking you away to the vibrant souks of Marrakesh, where I found myself entangled in a whirlwind of colors, culture, and, of course, rugs!

My decision to purchase a Moroccan rug wasn't a spontaneous one. It was a journey of mental contemplation and emotional exploration. Even though I knew I wanted to bring home a piece of Morocco, the magnitude of making a significant purchase required careful planning (and budgeting, of course). When I touched down in Morocco, little did I know that I was about to embark on an epic shopping spree — one I was only able to navigate because I had my mental money game in check.

Our trip to Morocco was an investment in itself, the most expensive Detour I've put on to date. Truthfully, I didn’t anticipate the depth of access we would have to the local artisans and their craft. Witnessing the creation of these rugs firsthand, to understand the stories behind each thread and pattern, was seriously mesmerizing.

At first, I had envisioned returning home with a modest doormat-sized rug. But fate had other plans for me, HA! Standing in the rug palace, surrounded by a kaleidoscope of colors and intricate designs, I was overwhelmed by the wave of choice. Each rug had its own story, connecting me to the rich tapestry of Moroccan culture and tradition.

The more I immersed myself in the experience, the more I realized that this might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. While I hope to return to Morocco, there's no guarantee I will or that I'll have the same access or experience. Being there in that moment, barefoot on the rugs, sharing in the stories they held, became a soul-stirring immersion into a culture and history that really resonated with me.

The decision to purchase wasn't without its challenges. Some exercised restraint due to budget constraints — and that was a poignant reminder of the weight of our choices. In the middle of negotiations and bargaining, I found myself drawn deeper into the narrative of each rug, understanding that their value transcended monetary terms.

Thanks to our guide Youssef's guidance, I navigated the delicate dance of bargaining with a sense of empowerment. Through this process, I gained a deeper appreciation for the artistry and cultural significance.

In the end, I walked away with not just one, but three magnificent rugs, each a testament to my journey of self-discovery and exploration. And yes, I knew that returning home would mean I’d be reshaping my budget for the year. But these rugs have since become more than just decorative items…they are symbols of my connection to a place and time that will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Preparing for a significant purchase, whether it’s a handcrafted rug in the vibrant markets of Morocco or a retreat with Dare, is more than just the transaction itself. It's a journey of granting yourself the freedom to indulge in what truly resonates with your soul. Here are five questions to guide yourself through this transformative process:

  1. Grant yourself permission: Allow yourself to invest in your dreams and passions. It's not just about the acquisition…it's about honoring your desires and nurturing what brings you joy. Give yourself the green light to embrace the allure of something unique and authentic.

  2. Embrace your uniqueness: You don't need to be an expert to appreciate quality. Release the grip of imposter syndrome and acknowledge that you deserve excellence from the start. Whether it's the weaving of an artisan-made item or navigating through cultural experiences, you're worthy of the finest threads of life.

  3. Find balance in sacrifice: Consider what you're willing to give up to welcome something new into your life. Just like my rug purchases meant reevaluating my yearly budget upon returning home and making adjustments, letting go of unnecessary burdens creates space for meaningful change. It's a delicate dance of trade-offs.

  4. Make a promise to yourself: Reflect on the commitment this purchase symbolizes. What promises do you make to yourself by taking this step? Whether it's dedicating more time to your passions or embracing new challenges, let this purchase be a catalyst for growth and accountability.

  5. Envision your transformed life: Picture the tapestry of your existence with this new addition. How does it amplify your experiences and aspirations? Go beyond the material aspect and explore the essence of what truly excites you. This vision will help to unveil the layers of your desires and light up your path to fulfillment.

With these questions as your compass, you can embark on your own journey of discovery and enrichment, embracing the magic that comes with a soulful, significant purchase decision.

Arriving at a decision with confidence and preparation truly changes the game. Instead of feeling anxious, there’s an excitement for what lies ahead. It's fascinating how we, especially moms, often struggle with spending on ourselves. Society has a way of making us feel guilty for prioritizing our own needs and desires.

But here's the thing – the process of buying those Moroccan rugs wasn't just about picking out beautiful decor for my home. It was about redefining my relationship with money and reevaluating my priorities. It showed me that some of the most meaningful investments are the ones that resonate with the deepest parts of who we are.
