How to Savor the 'Late Summer' Gap

It's September, which is back-to-school season, or in the words of my friend Breezy, “It's Virgo season!” A time that beckons us to dive into reorganizing our lives and jumpstarting our routines, but also, here in Montana, a time where we still get sweet pockets of warm days and weather to enjoy the final spoils of summer.

I've felt very excited to get back into my routines, but I'm not forcing fall. I'm someone who wants to hold onto summer as long as possible! But I'm embracing a few moments in between to prepare for it all.

So here’s my little list for you. I’d love to know how you feel about this transition point and if you are doing anything to embrace ‘Late Summer’ too!

How I'm savoring summer and transitioning into fall:

  1. Backyard activities! This weekend, I'll be prepping a veggie box for garlic that I will plant later this month.

  2. Making good nature's bounty. Namely, my crab apple tree, which is blooming out of control. I asked you guys on Instagram for recommendations on what to do with them, and the top suggestions were to make jam, jelly, hard cider, or fruit leather. I think I'm going to try out this jam recipe!

  3. A big task on the prepare-for-fall list is ensuring that my woodpile is fully stocked and prepped. I shared a photo of my woodpile last week, which I’m very proud of! But I know that cutting kindling and having it ready is just as important. When the cold weather sets in, the last thing I want to do is this. So, I'm taking the time now to chop little kindling bits and make sure I have everything I need for cozy fires.

  4. I'm also focusing on taking care of myself. I've been jumping into my wood-burning sauna a few times this summer, but in the fall and winter, I aim to use it three or four times a week. It's my favorite way to relax and unwind in the evening.

  5. Daily movement! Whether it’s a Zephyr class, a hike, or a dog walk. I also have a goal to get serious about strength training this fall. If you have any recommendations or resources for weightlifting, I would greatly appreciate them!

  6. Planning a road trip in my camper van. I'm hitting the road to Detour for some leaf-peeping and beer-tasting next month!

  7. Lastly, I plan to rip around on my scooter as much as possible before the snow arrives. Sister “Fredda” is giving me pure joy that I want to maximize before Montana’s cold settles in.

As I settle into this seasonal rhythm of life, I'm excited for what lies ahead. The crisp air and vibrant colors of fall await, and I'm ready to embrace the change while still savoring the remnants of summer. My intention is to embrace the ‘Late Summer’ gap and let the transitions unfold.

Here’s to a little more organization, healthy routines, and kicking up my feet in my backyard while I still can!
